Position Summary: A leading provider of engineering, construction materials testing, and special inspection services is seeking a highly skilled and results-driven Chief Operating Officer (COO) to oversee and optimize operations while contributing to the strategic direction of the organization in the mid-Atlantic. The COO will be a key member of the executive team, responsible for managing day-to-day operations, driving operational excellence, and aligning the company’s resources to achieve growth and profitability. This role requires a leader with deep industry expertise, exceptional leadership skills, and the ability to inspire a culture of collaboration, accountability, and innovation.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational Leadership
• Direct and manage all operational functions, including engineering, materials testing, and special inspection services.
• Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and meet the highest quality standards, complying with regulatory and industry requirements.
• Oversee the development and implementation of operational policies, procedures, and systems to streamline workflows and enhance efficiency.
• Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess operational performance and implement continuous improvements.
Strategic Planning and Execution
• Work closely with the executive team to develop and execute the company’s strategic plan, ensuring alignment with short- and long-term objectives.
• Identify growth opportunities in new markets, services, or geographic regions, particularly in sectors such as municipal, commercial, industrial, military, and government projects.
• Lead initiatives to expand service offerings and client base, driving revenue growth and market positioning.
Team Leadership and Development
• Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing team, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and professional development.
• Implement training programs and initiatives to enhance staff skills and ensure consistent delivery of technical excellence.
• Oversee staffing levels, resource allocation, and succession planning to support organizational growth and operational demands.
Business Development and Client Relations
• Partner with the business development team to cultivate and maintain strong client relationships.
• Support proposal development, contract negotiations, and client retention efforts.
• Represent the company at industry events, conferences, and meetings to enhance brand visibility and credibility.
Financial Oversight and Risk Management
• Manage operational budgets, ensuring cost control and financial sustainability.
• Collaborate with the finance team to develop forecasts, set financial goals, and assess profitability metrics.
• Identify and mitigate risks related to operations, compliance, and safety, maintaining adherence to industry regulations and standards.
Qualifications and Skills:
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a related field. An MBA or equivalent advanced degree is preferred.
• Experience: Minimum of 10 years of senior management experience in the engineering or related industry. Proven track record of operational leadership and strategic growth.
• Leadership: Exceptional ability to inspire and lead teams while fostering a culture of collaboration and accountability.
• Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of engineering and materials testing methodologies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Analytical Skills: Proficiency in analyzing operational metrics, financial data, and market trends to inform decision-making.
• Business Acumen: Demonstrated success in business development, client relationship management, and contract negotiation.
• Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with clients, staff, and stakeholders.
• Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities, with a results-oriented mindset.
